From central Manchester, join the M60 ring road and head towards the A580, known locally as the East Lancashire Road, then follow the signs for Atherton; this route is generally straightforward once you are off the motorway. Rail travellers can take a service from Manchester Victoria to Atherton railway station, which sits conveniently close to the town centre, and the number 582 bus also serves the area, running fairly frequently from both Bolton and Leigh. On the drive in, Leigh Sports Village and Pennington Flash are useful landmarks if you are navigating by eye, and both sit close enough to the route that seeing them is a reasonable sign you are on track. Parking is available in Atherton town centre or on nearby side streets if you are not being dropped directly at the industrial estate, and cyclists can use the Leigh Guided Busway path for a more direct route in. Walking paths around the town are reasonably well signposted too, which helps if you are approaching on foot from a bus stop or the railway station.
Because the test centre itself sits inside an industrial estate, routes typically start on quieter estate roads with wide junctions and little pedestrian traffic, then move onto Atherton’s residential streets where the pace and hazards change noticeably. An LPOD Academy intensive course here is built around that shift, giving learners practice on both the open estate roads and the tighter residential streets rather than assuming skill on one transfers automatically to the other. Course options include shorter Bronze 15 and Silver 25 packages for learners mainly sharpening existing ability, and longer Gold 45 courses for those who need more time to build core skills, with every course secured by a deposit rather than the full amount. our guide to applying for a provisional licence is a useful first step if you have not yet received yours.
On the day, arrive at Arley Way with your provisional licence, and remember there are no toilets on site, so use facilities before you travel. Since 12 May 2026, DVSA practical test bookings and any changes to them are managed by the candidate directly, so once your test date with this centre is confirmed, keep your reference details to hand.
