Drivers from London or Southampton should join the M3 and come off at either Junction 6 or Junction 7, both of which lead directly into town. By train, London Waterloo to Basingstoke usually takes under an hour, and the station sits centrally enough to walk into the town from. National Express and local bus services also run into the bus station regularly.
Festival Place is the clearest landmark once you’re near the centre, and the Eastrop Park and Festival Place car parks are the two most reliable places to leave a car if street parking is full. Basingstoke’s roundabout-heavy design means test routes here lean on multi-lane roundabouts and ring-road sections more than most towns of a similar size, so an intensive course that specifically works those junctions with LPOD Academy tends to pay off. Learners coming from Andover, Newbury, Fleet, Tadley and Alton face a similar mix of roundabouts on their own approach roads. If cycling in, local paths run alongside several of the main routes into town, and traffic through the centre tends to build during the morning and evening rush, so plan around that where you can. Any test-day questions worth double-checking beforehand are covered in LPOD Academy’s FAQs.
Independent driving sections from Franklin Avenue frequently loop through at least one of the town’s larger roundabouts, so sat nav practice specifically on Basingstoke’s ring road pays off more here than at a centre with a simpler layout. If you’re new to the area, give yourself an extra loop of the block before your appointment rather than parking at the very last minute.
Because Basingstoke’s road system was largely planned rather than inherited from an older town centre, signage tends to be clear and well placed, which helps when you’re relying on a sat nav for the independent driving section. Even so, a dry run of the route from wherever you’re staying to Franklin Avenue removes one more unknown from test day, and it’s worth doing at roughly the same time as your actual appointment so the traffic looks familiar.
