Parking is limited, so it is worth planning ahead rather than assuming a space will be free when you arrive, especially during busier morning slots. The centre has disabled access to accommodate all candidates. Alongside standard car tests, this centre also conducts ADI part two and three tests and taxi tests, so it handles a broader mix of appointments than a typical local centre, and queues can build accordingly.

The M5 is the main route in from both the north and south, connecting into the A30 or A38 depending on which direction you are approaching from. Trains to Exeter St David’s run regularly from London, Bristol and Plymouth, and the station sits close to the city centre. Traffic around the Cathedral can slow things down during peak hours, so anyone driving in should budget extra time and consider one of the park-and-ride options on the outskirts rather than searching for central parking, and cyclists can approach along the Exe Estuary Trail for a quieter final stretch.
Because Exeter’s test routes cover both the tighter historic streets and the faster roads near the motorway junctions, candidates benefit from practising the switch between the two rather than mastering just one. Silver 30 suits learners who mainly need to sharpen that transition, while Gold 45 gives more time for those still building broader confidence, and both are secured with a deposit rather than the full course fee upfront. The test structure is the same everywhere DVSA operates, eyesight check, safety questions, roughly 40 minutes of driving with an independent section, so a candidate’s edge in Exeter comes from knowing the Cathedral traffic and motorway approaches specifically.

The eyesight check happens first, reading a number plate from 20 metres away, followed by two vehicle safety questions before you set off. Around 20 minutes of the Exeter test is independent driving, which can be based on road signs or a sat nav the examiner provides, and given how the city mixes the historic centre with motorway approaches, both formats are worth practising rather than just one. You’ll get your result at Bishop Westall House as soon as the drive ends, with a pass certificate issued on the spot and a full licence following by post within a few weeks.
