The A92 is the main coastal route linking Montrose with Arbroath and Dundee to the south and Aberdeen to the north, and it’s the road most candidates will use to reach the town whichever direction they’re travelling from. Montrose railway station sits on the main line between Aberdeen and Edinburgh, making rail a genuinely practical option if you’d rather not drive to an unfamiliar test centre. Local buses connect Montrose with nearby towns including Brechin and Stonehaven, useful if you’re coming from a smaller community without a direct rail link. Montrose Basin, the tidal nature reserve on the edge of town, is a well-known landmark that can help with orientation as you approach. Parking in the town centre is generally straightforward outside of peak summer weekends, though it’s still worth allowing a little extra time if you’re unfamiliar with the layout. Coastal weather here can change quickly, so check conditions before setting off, particularly if wind is forecast, since it can affect driving conditions on the more exposed stretches of the A92. It’s also worth building time into your journey for single-track sections on some of the smaller approach roads feeding into the A92 from the west, since these call for a different kind of hazard awareness from the main coastal road itself. Because Montrose still functions as a working harbour town, occasional slow-moving vehicles connected to the fishing fleet or nearby industrial estates can appear on approach roads, so maintaining a wide following distance around the harbour area is a sensible habit to build before test day. LPOD Academy prepares learners from Brechin, Laurencekirk, Stonehaven and Montrose, Ferryden and Inchbraoch for tests booked here, with course choices from the Bronze 15 up to the full range of intensive courses. If a cancellation slot could bring your test date forward, our guide on finding a cancellation appointment explains the process. Bring your provisional licence to your appointment; DVSA’s booking rules changed on 12 May 2026, putting responsibility for booking and managing your practical test into your own hands as the candidate.
