The A483 runs directly through Newtown and is how most learners reach the test centre, whether travelling up from Welshpool and the English border to the north or down from Llanidloes and mid Wales to the south. The A489 branches off towards Church Stretton and Bishop’s Castle for those coming from further east. Vastre Industrial Estate sits slightly off the main road, so the final stretch involves turning off the trunk road onto quieter estate roads with lower speed limits and tighter junctions.
Test routes here typically combine this open A483 driving with the slower, more technical driving needed around the industrial estate and Newtown’s town centre streets, so candidates should expect both dual carriageway sections and low-speed manoeuvring within the same test. An LPOD Academy intensive course, such as Bronze 10 or Silver 25, builds practice on both types of road into the final lessons before your test, with a deposit from £180 depending on which package you choose.
Mid Wales has fewer test slots available each week than a large city centre, so an intensive course run over consecutive days is often the most realistic way to get properly road-ready in the time before your appointment, rather than spreading a handful of lessons across several months and losing momentum in between. It also lets your instructor plan around the A483’s traffic patterns directly, rather than guessing what the roads will be like weeks in advance.
On the day, remember that L plates, or D plates if you prefer, must be displayed on the car you arrive in, and the examiner will ask to see your provisional licence before you start. The independent driving section of the test usually lasts around 20 minutes and may use road signs, a sat-nav, or both, so ask your instructor to run through each format at least once beforehand. Since 12 May 2026, DVSA test bookings, changes and cancellations must be made by the candidate directly, not by an instructor on their behalf, so hold onto your own login details for the whole course. For more detail on how a course like this is put together, see our guide to how intensive courses work. Passing your test in an automatic car restricts your licence to automatics only, shown as category code seventy-eight, so if you have trained in a manual with LPOD Academy near Newtown, your full licence will cover both.
