From Manchester, take the M60 heading northeast, then merge onto the M62 at Junction 18 and leave again at Junction 20 for Rochdale. Hollingworth Lake Country Park is a well-known landmark on the approach and a useful check that you are heading the right way. By train, services from Manchester Victoria take around 20 minutes, and Metrolink trams also connect the two towns, calling at Oldham along the route. Local buses, including the 17 and 471, run between Rochdale town centre and the surrounding areas if you would rather avoid driving in.
Rochdale’s test routes reflect the town’s position between city and hill country: expect roundabouts and stop-start traffic near the centre, then steeper roads with tighter bends further out towards Littleborough and Whitworth. Hill starts, clutch control on gradients and steady observation on narrower rural stretches all come up more often here than on a flat route, which is why LPOD Academy Silver 30 and LPOD Academy Gold 45 both build gradient practice into the course, alongside our guide to finding a cancellation test slot for candidates keen to test sooner than the standard waiting list allows.
Get to Wellington Street with time to spare, since parking nearby can fill up during the working day, and bring your provisional licence every visit. From 12 May 2026, remember that only the candidate can book or manage their own DVSA practical test appointment, and any change of date must go through the candidate’s own account rather than an instructor’s.
Given how varied Rochdale’s routes can be, some learners choose to have their instructor sit in as an observer, which the DVSA allows once it has been arranged at reception. A retest slot cannot be booked until at least ten working days after an unsuccessful attempt, and the transmission you test in carries forward: pass in an automatic and your licence is restricted to automatics, while a manual pass covers both. Anyone using their own car for the test rather than a dual-control vehicle must have it insured, taxed and fitted with L plates.
