Practical test centre in Skipton

Skipton, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, runs its DVSA practical test centre from the Auction Mart on Gargrave Road, a site that also serves candidates from Ilkley, Keighley, Settle, and Barnoldswick. Only car practical tests are held here, which keeps the site relatively small compared with some of the bigger city centres nearby, and the surrounding roads stay closer to typical Dales driving than to city traffic.

Skipton Practical Test Centre Address

DVSA Skipton Test Centre is located at Skipton Auction Mart, Gargrave Road, Skipton, BD23 1UD. The site offers parking facilities for test candidates, which is a straightforward part of arriving here compared with more built-up towns. Toilets are available. Disabled access is provided to accommodate candidates with mobility needs. The centre conducts car practical driving tests, and because parking is on site rather than on the street, there’s no need to build in extra time hunting for a space before your appointment. Having dedicated parking and toilets on site puts Skipton ahead of several nearby Yorkshire centres in terms of straightforward logistics on the day itself.

How To Get To Skipton Test Centre

Drivers coming from the south should take the A65, passing through Ilkley and Addingham on the way in, while those approaching from the west can use the A59 via Clitheroe and Gisburn; both routes mix open road sections with roundabouts and give a fair sense of the driving conditions examiners assess locally. Skipton’s train station sits on the Leeds to Morecambe line, with frequent services from Leeds and Bradford making it an easy trip without a car. The Leeds-Liverpool Canal runs through the town and is a handy landmark for orientation as you approach Gargrave Road. Regular buses also connect from Keighley and Harrogate. Parking around the town includes the High Street car park, though the Auction Mart site itself has its own parking, so there’s rarely a need to park centrally and walk. Skipton gets noticeably busier on market days, so if your test or lesson falls on one, allow extra time for the roads near the town centre.

LPOD’s intensive courses run learners through the A65 and A59 approaches specifically, since these carry the roundabouts and open-road driving that Skipton examiners use, and the last day of a course typically includes a full mock test at the same time of day as the real booking. Candidates from Ilkley, Keighley, Settle, and Barnoldswick can build a Silver 25 or Gold 35 course around exactly this route before testing at Gargrave Road. Bring your provisional licence on the day, wear any glasses or lenses you normally drive in, and have your theory pass number to hand if it wasn’t taken at booking. Since 12 May 2026 the candidate has to book and manage their own DVSA practical test rather than leave it to an instructor or parent. Our guide to how intensive courses work explains how this kind of route-focused preparation is sequenced.

Nationally, every practical test keeps the same basic format: about 40 minutes on the road, roughly half of it independent driving using directions or a sat nav, one manoeuvre chosen by the examiner, and an emergency stop on some tests. Skipton’s own character comes from its Dales setting, where the A65 and A59 both mix open, fairly fast sections with tighter market-town streets and the occasional livestock-related hazard that simply doesn’t come up on urban test routes. Candidates travelling in from Ilkley or Keighley often bring solid experience of busier roads but less confidence on narrower rural stretches, while those from smaller Dales villages sometimes need the opposite balance, more practice with roundabouts and multi-lane driving than they get locally. A good course adjusts for whichever gap actually exists rather than assuming every learner in the Skipton catchment needs the same kind of preparation, which is part of why course length varies so much between individual learners even when they’re testing at the same centre.

Why Book With LPOD Academy?

Can LPOD book my practical test at this centre for me?
No. Since 12 May 2026, only you can book, change or manage your DVSA practical test. LPOD provides test date support instead: centre and timing guidance as standard, plus an optional Test Alerts + Booking Strategy add-on (£50) if you’d like us actively watching for earlier dates and helping you plan around them.

Which course should I choose before my test?
It depends on your experience. Complete beginners usually start with a Gold or Platinum course, while learners who have already had lessons or sat a test before often suit a Silver or Bronze course. Try our course recommendation tool for a personal suggestion.

Are LPOD instructors qualified?
Yes. Every LPOD instructor is a DVSA-approved ADI, paid full market rates, so you get a properly qualified instructor rather than the cheapest bidder.
