How To Get A Cancellation Driving Test Appointment
To get a cancellation driving test you check the official DVSA service yourself, repeatedly, and book the slot the moment it appears. Slots are released when other candidates move or cancel, often at short notice and often overnight or first thing in the morning.
The rules changed on 12 May 2026. Only you can book, change, swap or cancel your own car practical test. No instructor, driving school, app, agent or cancellation-finding service may do it for you. A test booked or changed through one of those services can be cancelled by the DVSA with no refund, so paying someone to hunt for a slot on your behalf now costs you the slot and the money.

The three limits that decide your strategy
- Two changes only. Since 31 March 2026 you can change a booked test twice. After that you are stuck with the date, so do not spend a change on a slot that is only slightly earlier.
- Three nearest centres. Since 9 June 2026 you can only move to one of your three closest test centres, so that is where to point your search.
- Ten working days. Give at least 10 full working days’ notice to change or cancel a practical test, or you lose the fee.
How to actually find a cancellation
- Log in to the official DVSA change-your-test service with your driving licence number and booking reference. Slots other people have released show as available.
- Check at the right times. Short-notice releases tend to surface overnight, first thing in the morning, and in the days immediately before a test date.
- Check all three of your nearest centres, not just the one you originally chose.
- Be flexible on time of day. Early and late slots go last.
- Book it immediately. A released slot is visible to everyone looking at the same moment.
- Only take it if you are genuinely test-ready. An earlier date you fail costs you £62 and puts you back in the same queue.
If you want the notification without the constant refreshing, an alerts service is legal as long as it only alerts. You still do the booking. Anything offering to secure the slot for you is the banned kind.

Can I swap a test with someone else by calling the DVSA?
Since 12 May 2026 each learner has to deal with their own booking, so the old routine of one person calling with both sets of details no longer applies. You and the other learner each contact the DVSA about your own test, following the current gov.uk “change your driving test” guidance, and the DVSA confirms the change with each of you separately. Do not hand your booking reference or licence details to anyone else, and do not let anyone else act on your booking.

You can ask the company you are having driving lessons with if they have any candidates that wish to swap your driving test date.

You could give them a call to inquire, though availability at the moment of your call can vary. Often, there might not be any slots available, but it’s still worth trying. You might just get lucky!

What are the best cancellation apps?
The only safe answer now is: one that alerts and nothing more. Judge an alerts service on how fast and how targeted its notifications are, and rule out immediately any that asks for your DVSA login, offers to book for you, or claims to guarantee an earlier date.
