I work rotating shifts including nights, when would I even do this?

Most rotas include a run of rest days after a block of nights, and that’s usually the more realistic window than trying to fit lessons around days off scattered between shifts. Courses run during the day, so the plan works best if your rest days fall clear of a night block finishing that morning rather than starting the day straight after a run of lates. If your rota is published several weeks ahead, book against a confirmed stretch rather than a pattern you’re assuming will repeat, rota changes at short notice are common enough in this line of work that assuming anything is risky.

Does driving for work already mean I need less from a course?

Not necessarily. Driving as part of the job, under whatever arrangements your service uses, isn’t the same thing as holding a standard car driving licence for your own vehicle, and the two can be quite separate. If you’re coming to this without a full licence of your own, the course starts from wherever you actually are as a learner rather than assuming your work experience carries across directly. Your instructor will assess your baseline honestly in the first session, and build the rest of the course around that rather than around what your job title might suggest, whether that means starting with the fundamentals or moving fairly quickly into busier roads.

How do I protect a course booking against a shift swap falling through?

Shift swaps in emergency services can fall through at short notice, so it’s worth building a little slack into your course dates rather than booking against the tightest possible gap. Tell us as early as you can if something changes, we’d rather move a lesson than have you arrive after an unplanned shift with nothing left in the tank. Booking a slightly longer course with lighter daily hours is sometimes a more realistic option than a short, intense week if your rota is genuinely unpredictable, since it gives more room to absorb a single disrupted day without losing the whole course.

What if my rota genuinely never settles into a predictable pattern?

If a fixed pattern isn’t realistic for you, a semi-intensive course spread over two to four weeks, rather than one solid week, is usually a better fit than trying to force a short, packed course onto an unpredictable rota. It takes longer overall, but each individual day is easier to protect, and a single disrupted shift is less likely to derail the whole course. What’s the actual cost breakdown?

Three separate amounts make up the total. The deposit, from £180 up to £900 depending on course length, secures your booking and is never the full price. The balance is your instructor’s tuition fee, arranged after booking and due before training starts, varying by area and by manual or automatic. Separately, the DVSA charges £23 for the theory test and £62 for a weekday practical, paid directly to them rather than to us. Who books the practical test now, and does shift work make that harder?

From 12 May 2026, only you can book and manage your own DVSA practical test account, no exceptions for shift patterns or job. We advise on strategy and flag earlier slots, but the booking has to come from you directly rather than through us. If your rota makes some weeks more reliable than others, it’s worth booking your test for one of those rather than the first available slot regardless of your shift pattern, since moving a confirmed test date isn’t always straightforward once it’s booked.
