Virtual assistant work is usually billed in client hours, which makes a week away from the inbox feel like a direct hit to income in a way a salaried job doesn’t. Whether an intensive course is the right shape of course for you comes down to how your client hours are structured, not just how quickly you want to pass.

Is an intensive course actually right for you?

An intensive course suits you if you can genuinely clear several consecutive days, or arrange cover or reduced hours with clients in advance, without those days quietly filling back up with billable work anyway. If your client base is largely fixed retainer hours you can reschedule with notice, that’s usually manageable. If you’re juggling several clients with unpredictable, same-week requests, a slightly less compressed course, spread across a couple of weeks rather than one solid block, may suit your income better even if it takes a little longer. Be honest with yourself about which of these two situations you’re actually in before you book, since committing to the wrong shape of course is the most common reason lessons get abandoned halfway through. If you regularly cover for another VA, or have a working relationship where you occasionally cover for each other during holidays, that existing arrangement is often the simplest way to clear a training week without your clients noticing much difference at all, and it’s worth setting up even if you don’t currently have a course date in mind.

How many hours: a rough starting point

Manual or automatic when your income is billed by the hour

There’s no hourly-income angle that makes one transmission clearly better than the other, but automatic tends to reach test-ready competence in fewer hours for some learners, which matters more when every extra day of lessons is a day of client hours you’re not earning. Manual keeps your licence valid for a wider range of vehicles afterwards. It’s a genuine trade-off worth thinking through before you commit to a course length, since switching part-way through adds cost and time you’ll want to avoid.

If you’re still undecided, it’s worth thinking about what you’ll actually be driving once you pass, rather than only what gets you there fastest. A cheaper automatic route to a licence is only a good trade if the car you end up driving day to day is also automatic.

Squaring client retainers with a week off the clock

Most VA contracts don’t come with built-in cover the way an employed role might, so work out who’s picking up urgent client messages before you commit to dates, not after. That might mean a fellow VA covering emergencies for a flat fee, an autoresponder that sets expectations honestly, or simply choosing a week where none of your retainer clients has a known deadline. Confirm this with your regular clients directly rather than assuming a quiet week on your end means a quiet week for them too.

Once cover is sorted, confirm your deposit and course length together, deposits run from £180 up to £900 depending on hours, and check the price guide for how the balance, your instructor’s tuition fee, gets arranged separately and varies by area.
