Practical test centre in Benbecula Island

Benbecula sits in the Outer Hebrides, linked by causeway to North Uist and South Uist, and the island’s only driving test centre operates out of Balivanich Airport rather than a dedicated building in a town centre. Because the whole of the Uists shares this one centre, learners here often travel a genuine distance just to reach test day, not just a short hop across town.

Balivanich itself is a small settlement built up around the airport, and the roads leading to it are some of the quietest a UK learner will test on, which brings its own set of habits to practise.

There’s no real town centre to speak of around Balivanich in the way mainland learners might expect, just the airport, a scattering of housing, and the roads that connect them to the rest of the islands.

Practical Test Centre Address

The test centre is at Balivanich Airport, Balivanich, Isle of Benbecula, HS7 5LH. Car and motorcycle tests are both run from here. Parking is available and the site is accessible to disabled candidates, though there are no toilet facilities on site, so plan for that before you arrive.

Given how far some candidates travel to reach Benbecula, build real slack into your journey rather than cutting it fine, since a missed ferry or delayed flight leaves no easy backup option here. Bring your provisional licence, and note that from 12 May 2026 DVSA only lets the candidate book or manage their own practical test, so a family member can’t do that part for you even from the mainland. An LPOD Academy Gold 40 course compressed into consecutive days suits this kind of location well, since it reduces the number of separate trips a learner needs to make to and from the islands before they’re ready.

The test itself is identical to any other UK centre: eyesight check, two vehicle safety questions, roughly twenty minutes of general driving, one manoeuvre, and independent driving, though sat nav signal can be patchy across parts of the islands. Carry a paper map as a backup and bring your provisional licence regardless of how familiar the roads already feel.

How To Get To Benbecula Island Test Centre

Most learners reach Benbecula by air: fly into Glasgow or Edinburgh first, then take a Loganair connection to Benbecula Airport at Balivanich. Driving is possible too, though it takes longer. From the Scottish mainland, one route runs through the Highlands to Uig on Skye, where a Caledonian MacBrayne ferry sails to Lochmaddy on North Uist; from there, the A865 runs south across a series of causeways, including the one linking North Uist to Benbecula. Coming from further south, a ferry from Oban to Lochboisdale on South Uist connects to the A865 heading north instead, passing the Carnan and Grimsay causeways on the way.

Local roads across the islands are frequently single track, with passing places rather than full-width lanes, so test routes from Balivanich lean heavily on that skill: judging when to pull in, reading oncoming traffic early, and keeping a steady pace on open, unmarked stretches rather than the roundabout-and-dual-carriageway routes typical of mainland towns. There isn’t a large served-towns network feeding this centre the way there is on the mainland, since so few roads connect to it, but LPOD Academy still runs an intensive course structured for island learners, working single-track technique and causeway driving specifically rather than generic town-centre habits. Public buses connect the islands for anyone without their own car, and hiring one locally is worth considering if you’re travelling in just for the test. Check ferry and flight timetables well ahead of the date, since Hebridean weather can disrupt both with little warning, and if you have time to spare once you’ve arrived, the ruins of Borve Castle are close by.

Because independent driving here may rely on road signs rather than a sat nav if signal drops, practising route-following from signage alone is worth doing before test day, not just relying on a device. Fuel and services are limited outside Balivanich itself, so plan the practical side of the trip as carefully as the driving.

Why Book With LPOD Academy?

Can LPOD book my practical test at this centre for me?
No. Since 12 May 2026, only you can book, change or manage your DVSA practical test. LPOD provides test date support instead: centre and timing guidance as standard, plus an optional Test Alerts + Booking Strategy add-on (£50) if you’d like us actively watching for earlier dates and helping you plan around them.

Which course should I choose before my test?
It depends on your experience. Complete beginners usually start with a Gold or Platinum course, while learners who have already had lessons or sat a test before often suit a Silver or Bronze course. Try our course recommendation tool for a personal suggestion.

Are LPOD instructors qualified?
Yes. Every LPOD instructor is a DVSA-approved ADI, paid full market rates, so you get a properly qualified instructor rather than the cheapest bidder.
