The M6 is the usual route in: leave at Junction 7 and follow the A34 toward Birmingham, passing through Great Barr before signs for Kingstanding appear. Kingstanding Circle itself, a large roundabout that acts as the area’s main hub, is the clearest landmark once you’re close. There’s no train station in Kingstanding, so rail travellers should get off at Birmingham New Street and pick up a bus heading north instead; the 33 runs directly from the city centre to Kingstanding.
Kingstanding Circle is really the centrepiece of any test route run from here, and its size means multi-lane roundabout skills, particularly correct lane choice and mirror checks on the approach, matter more at this centre than at many others in the city. Straight, wide residential roads fill in the rest of a typical route, a contrast to the tighter streets around Kings Heath a few miles south. Learners from Birmingham, Pheasey and Royal Sutton Coldfield all approach Kingstanding from slightly different angles, but most routes in converge on the A34 near Great Barr regardless. Cyclists can use paths alongside sections of the A34, though the roundabout itself demands full attention from anyone on two wheels. Roads through the area tend to get congested during peak hours, so building in extra time either side of rush hour makes for a calmer journey to a test that’s stressful enough already. For a full run-through of common questions before test day, LPOD Academy’s FAQs page is worth a look.
Independent driving sections here are likely to include at least one pass of Kingstanding Circle itself, so sat nav practice that specifically routes through it, rather than around it, reflects what the test is likely to ask for. Given how much of the local layout repeats, a lesson spent on lane discipline through multiple roundabouts in one session tends to generalise well across the whole estate.
Whichever route brings you in, treat the final approach through Great Barr as a genuine part of the lesson, since the mix of roundabout and residential road there closely mirrors what the test itself covers.
