Practical test centre in East Kilbride

Heading south from Glasgow, most drivers join the M74 and exit at junction 5, following signs for the A725 which leads directly into East Kilbride. Strathclyde Country Park sits along this route and is a popular spot with both locals and visitors, making it a handy landmark on the way in. A more scenic alternative is the A749, passing through Rutherglen and Burnside, which takes a little longer but avoids some of the motorway traffic during busier periods.

Public transport is straightforward too. Glasgow Central Station runs frequent trains to East Kilbride, with the journey taking around 30 minutes, and East Kilbride’s own bus station offers connections from a range of nearby towns for anyone travelling in without a car. Cyclists have dedicated paths running alongside some of the main roads, a genuine option for those based locally. Whichever way you travel, having an up to date map or satnav is worth it given how many detours are possible around the town’s roundabout network, and checking real time traffic before you set off can save a frustrating last few minutes before an appointment.

A typical East Kilbride test route makes full use of the town’s roundabout heavy layout, often stringing together three or four in quick succession along with a stretch of the A725 at higher speed. Learners used to towns with more traditional junctions sometimes need extra practice reading which lane to be in well before reaching a roundabout here, since East Kilbride’s design gives less room for last minute lane changes than an older town layout would. Traffic volumes build noticeably during the morning and evening commute given how many people travel through the town on their way to and from Glasgow, so examiners will sometimes time routes to include a stretch of busier traffic deliberately. A concentrated block of lessons ahead of test day, repeated across consecutive sessions rather than spread weekly, is particularly useful here specifically for building confidence with the roundabout sequencing that makes this route distinctive.

Once your test is done, the East Kilbride Shopping Centre, one of Scotland’s largest indoor malls, is worth a visit if you want to make a day of the trip.

The centre serves a wide area beyond East Kilbride itself, including Hamilton, Larkhall, Strathaven and Kirkmuirhill and Blackwood, all of which funnel onto the same A725 or M74 approach roads.
