Practical test centre in Edinburgh (Currie)

Currie, on the southwest edge of Edinburgh, is where the city’s suburbs give way to the Pentland Hills, and its DVSA test centre off South Gyle Crescent Lane draws learners from well beyond the immediate area. Candidates travel in from Bonnyrigg, Dalkeith, Mayfield and Gorebridge, Loanhead and Bilston, Ratho and South Queensferry to test here, which means the centre sees everything from settled residential streets to the faster A70 approach into town. Because the catchment is so spread out, familiarity with Currie’s specific junctions matters more than general driving experience picked up elsewhere, and candidates who arrive having only driven near their own home often notice the difference straight away. LPOD Academy’s intensive courses are built around exactly that: concentrated days of local driving rather than one lesson a week for months, timed to finish close to the test date so the roads are still fresh. Booking has also changed, since 12 May 2026 the DVSA system only lets the candidate themselves book or amend their practical test.

Practical Test Centre Address

Currie Driving Test Centre is found at 3 Bryce Road, South Gyle Crescent Lane, Edinburgh, EH12 9EB. Parking facilities are provided for candidates, and toilets are available on site, which is worth knowing if you are travelling a distance to get there. Disabled access is in place throughout the building. As well as standard car and motorcycle tests, this centre also conducts ADI tests for approved driving instructors, so it handles a broader mix of appointments than most sites in the area, and waiting areas can be busier at certain times as a result.

Getting To The Currie Test Centre Test Centre

By road, the usual approach is the M8 motorway between Glasgow and Edinburgh, switching onto the A720 City Bypass heading south once you reach the city, then taking the A70 Lanark Road exit that leads directly into Currie. Landmarks along the way include the Water of Leith and the Pentland Hills Regional Park, both useful for orientation if you lose your bearings on the bypass. Without a car, Edinburgh Waverley has regular trains out to Curriehill Station, and Lothian Buses services 44 and 45 both terminate close to the village centre; cyclists can also follow the Union Canal towpath most of the way, though this is a slower option best suited to those with time to spare.

Test routes from Currie tend to mix that same residential character with brisker stretches near the bypass junction, which is exactly the kind of transition many learners under-practise. An LPOD Academy course such as Silver 20 or, for those wanting more time behind the wheel, Gold 40 builds in repeated runs over those transition points rather than a single trial run the week before the test. Structurally, every DVSA test follows the same shape wherever you sit it: an eyesight check, a couple of safety questions, then about 40 minutes of driving with an independent section built in, so it is the roads rather than the format that change from one centre to the next.

Whatever route you take on the day, leave earlier than you think you need to, since bypass traffic can back up without warning, and bring your provisional licence with you regardless of how you travel. Our guide to how intensive courses work is worth a read beforehand if you want to understand how the intensive-course structure fits around a test date. Since 12 May 2026, only you as the candidate can book, reschedule or cancel your own DVSA practical test appointment.

Before the driving starts, you will be asked two vehicle safety questions, the show-me-tell-me pair that most learners find easier than expected once they have practised them a few times. About 20 minutes of the test is independent driving, which around Currie can mean following the examiner’s sat nav directions out towards the bypass rather than reading road signs, so both formats are worth covering in your lessons rather than assuming one or the other. Results are given immediately at South Gyle Crescent Lane, and a pass certificate is issued on the spot if you’re successful, with your full licence arriving by post in the weeks that follow.

Why Book With LPOD Academy?

Can LPOD book my practical test at this centre for me?
No. Since 12 May 2026, only you can book, change or manage your DVSA practical test. LPOD provides test date support instead: centre and timing guidance as standard, plus an optional Test Alerts + Booking Strategy add-on (£50) if you’d like us actively watching for earlier dates and helping you plan around them.

Which course should I choose before my test?
It depends on your experience. Complete beginners usually start with a Gold or Platinum course, while learners who have already had lessons or sat a test before often suit a Silver or Bronze course. Try our course recommendation tool for a personal suggestion.

Are LPOD instructors qualified?
Yes. Every LPOD instructor is a DVSA-approved ADI, paid full market rates, so you get a properly qualified instructor rather than the cheapest bidder.
