Practical test centre in Folkestone

Folkestone’s DVSA centre, tucked into Shearway Business Park on the edge of town, serves this stretch of the Kent coast close to the Channel Tunnel terminal. Candidates from Hythe, Hawkinge, Dymchurch, Lydd and Whitfield, Dover all test here, alongside learners already living in Folkestone itself, which gives the centre one of the more varied catchments among Kent’s coastal towns. Local test routes take in everything from the Leas promenade area to the faster roads feeding the M20, so candidates need to be equally comfortable at low speed near pedestrians and at higher speed approaching the motorway junction. An LPOD Academy intensive course is built to cover that full range in a short, focused block of lessons, and from 12 May 2026 only the candidate can book or manage their own DVSA practical test.

Practical Test Centre Address

DVSA Folkestone Test Centre is at Unit 6, Shearway Business Park, Shearway Road, Folkestone, Kent, CT19 4RH. Parking is available onsite. Toilets are provided, though there are no specific disabled access facilities at this location, so candidates who need step-free or adapted access should check ahead with DVSA before their appointment. The centre conducts car, motorcycle, and LGV tests, giving it a broader remit than most centres of similar size, so waiting areas can see a real mix of vehicle types on any given day. Candidates travelling from further along the coast should factor the M20 traffic into their journey time rather than cutting it fine.

Reaching The Folkestone Test Centre Test Centre

By car from London, take the M20 and leave at Junction 13, following signs for Folkestone into the town centre. By train, Southeastern’s high-speed service from London St Pancras International reaches Folkestone Central in under an hour, which is often quicker door-to-door than driving. Stagecoach runs frequent local bus services once you’re in town, and cyclists can pick up National Cycle Route 2, which passes through Folkestone. The Leas promenade and the harbour’s Creative Quarter are clear landmarks if you’re navigating by eye near the seafront, both useful for confirming you’re in the right part of town.

Because Folkestone’s routes mix that seafront, pedestrian-heavy area with the faster roads near the M20 junction, candidates who have only practised in one setting tend to feel the gap on test day. Bronze 15 gives a shorter, focused run of lessons aimed at closing that gap, while Platinum 50 suits learners who want to spend more time on both sides of it before their test. Regardless of centre, the DVSA test keeps the same shape, eyesight check, safety questions, roughly 40 minutes of driving including independent driving, so Folkestone candidates gain the most by rehearsing the seafront-to-motorway transition specifically.

Parking on site is available, so allow time to settle rather than rushing straight from the car park to your appointment, and bring your provisional licence regardless of how you travel. If you’re unsure about cover while you’re learning, our learner driver insurance guide explains what is required. From 12 May 2026, DVSA has confirmed that only the candidate can book, amend, or cancel their own practical test.

Expect an eyesight check first, reading a number plate from 20 metres, then two vehicle safety questions before the drive itself starts. Independent driving makes up around 20 minutes of the Folkestone test, and given the seafront-to-motorway route mix, that section can involve either road signs or a sat nav the examiner sets up, so both are worth practising rather than just one. You’ll get your result at Shearway Business Park as soon as the drive ends, with a pass certificate issued on the spot and a full licence following by post within a few weeks. Because this centre also handles LGV tests alongside car and motorcycle categories, double-check your own booking category before you set off on the day.

Why Book With LPOD Academy?

Can LPOD book my practical test at this centre for me?
No. Since 12 May 2026, only you can book, change or manage your DVSA practical test. LPOD provides test date support instead: centre and timing guidance as standard, plus an optional Test Alerts + Booking Strategy add-on (£50) if you’d like us actively watching for earlier dates and helping you plan around them.

Which course should I choose before my test?
It depends on your experience. Complete beginners usually start with a Gold or Platinum course, while learners who have already had lessons or sat a test before often suit a Silver or Bronze course. Try our course recommendation tool for a personal suggestion.

Are LPOD instructors qualified?
Yes. Every LPOD instructor is a DVSA-approved ADI, paid full market rates, so you get a properly qualified instructor rather than the cheapest bidder.
