Practical test centre in Lochgilphead

Lochgilphead is a small Argyll town, and its test centre on Manse Brae is one of the more rural options on our network, serving candidates spread across a wide stretch of the western Highlands. Because so much of the surrounding road network is single-carriageway with sweeping bends rather than roundabouts, learners testing at Lochgilphead need practice that looks quite different from a city centre course. Candidates from Lochgilphead town itself and from Rothesay, reached by ferry across the Firth of Clyde, both rely on LPOD Academy instructors who know this rural road character well. Single track sections with passing places appear on some approach routes, and knowing the etiquette around them, who gives way and how far ahead to plan, is not something most learners pick up from a handful of lessons in a town.

Practical Test Centre Address

Lochgilphead Test Centre, Manse Brae, Lochgilphead, PA31 8QX. There are no customer toilets at this centre, parking spaces are limited, and disabled access is present. Both car and motorcycle tests are conducted here. Given the limited parking, candidates arriving by car should aim to get there early rather than risk circling Manse Brae looking for a space right before their appointment. Bring your provisional licence and confirmation with you, and plan for the nearest toilet stop before you arrive, since none are available once you reach the centre itself.

How To Get To Lochgilphead Test Centre

From Glasgow, take the M8 westbound and follow signs for the A82 towards Dumbarton, then switch to the A83 at Tarbet. This stretch runs through the Arrochar Alps and past the Rest and Be Thankful viewpoint, a natural place to stop if you need a break, before continuing on the A83 all the way into Lochgilphead. Public transport is possible but slower: a ScotRail service from Glasgow to Oban, alighting at Dalmally, connects with the 926 bus route into town. Cyclists sometimes approach from Inveraray along the Crinan Canal, though that route is better suited to leisure than to getting to a test on time.

An LPOD Academy intensive course built for Lochgilphead spends most of its time on single-carriageway overtaking judgement, tight bends and the kind of hazard perception that only comes from driving genuinely rural roads, rather than the roundabout drills a city course would focus on. Silver 30 gives enough hours to cover that ground properly for learners starting with limited experience. Mobile signal can be patchy on the approach roads, so keep a paper note of your test time and centre address rather than relying solely on a phone. As with every DVSA test centre, from 12 May 2026 only the candidate can book, change or manage their own practical test, and if the first offered date does not suit, our guide to getting a cancellation test slot explains how to search for something sooner.

Weather changes quickly in this part of Argyll, and roads that feel straightforward in dry conditions can turn demanding in rain or low winter light, so it is worth scheduling at least some lessons outside of a clear, calm afternoon. Candidates travelling in from Rothesay should factor the ferry timetable into their journey planning as well as the drive itself, since missing a sailing on test morning leaves very little margin to reach Manse Brae on time.

Livestock on the road is not unusual around Lochgilphead, and reacting calmly rather than braking sharply is exactly the kind of hazard perception examiners want to see. A course built for this area also spends time on judging overtakes safely on long, straight single-carriageway stretches, since misjudging one is a far more common test fault here than anything to do with junctions, roundabouts or tight town-centre parking manoeuvres of the kind more common at busier centres.

Why Book With LPOD Academy?

Can LPOD book my practical test at this centre for me?
No. Since 12 May 2026, only you can book, change or manage your DVSA practical test. LPOD provides test date support instead: centre and timing guidance as standard, plus an optional Test Alerts + Booking Strategy add-on (£50) if you’d like us actively watching for earlier dates and helping you plan around them.

Which course should I choose before my test?
It depends on your experience. Complete beginners usually start with a Gold or Platinum course, while learners who have already had lessons or sat a test before often suit a Silver or Bronze course. Try our course recommendation tool for a personal suggestion.

Are LPOD instructors qualified?
Yes. Every LPOD instructor is a DVSA-approved ADI, paid full market rates, so you get a properly qualified instructor rather than the cheapest bidder.
