Practical test centre in Northampton

Northampton test centre on Gladstone Road covers a wide slice of the county, with learners travelling in from Kettering, Wellingborough, Daventry, Towcester and Brixworth as well as the town itself. Northampton sits just off the M1, with the A45 running through the town connecting it to the wider road network, so the roads used on test routes mix motorway-adjacent dual carriageway with tighter residential streets close to Gladstone Road. A test here runs for around 40 minutes in the usual national format, and given the size of the catchment, no two candidates should assume they will get an identical route. LPOD Academy’s intensive courses here train for both types of road rather than assuming every test will stay on quiet streets.

Practical Test Centre Address

The test centre is on Gladstone Road, Northampton, NN5 7QA. There are no toilets available on site. Parking is limited, so allow extra time to find a space nearby. Step-free access is provided for disabled candidates. Tests offered here include car, motorcycle, and vocational categories. Because parking is limited, consider arriving on foot or by taxi if your lesson finishes elsewhere in town, and always bring your provisional licence and theory test pass certificate number, since your test cannot start without them. As with any DVSA test, expect a tell me and show me vehicle safety question, and remember you can make up to 15 minor faults across the drive and still pass, provided nothing serious or dangerous happens.

How To Get To Northampton Test Centre

The M1 is the main route into Northampton for anyone travelling from London, Leicester or further afield, usually leaving the motorway to join the A45, which runs through the town and connects to most of the surrounding suburbs. Gladstone Road itself sits within a residential part of town, so the final approach involves narrower streets, parked cars, and a handful of junctions without traffic lights, which is a useful thing to practise before your test rather than leaving it to the day itself.

Because Northampton is such a large centre, the routes examiners use vary considerably: some tests stay largely within the residential streets near Gladstone Road, while others head out onto the A45 or towards the ring road for faster, dual carriageway driving. An LPOD Academy intensive course, from Bronze 15 up to Gold 45, is built around this variety, with mock tests in the final days covering both types of road so nothing on the day comes as a surprise. Deposits start from £180 and rise with course length, and are always quoted as a deposit rather than a total price.

With learners coming in from towns as far apart as Brackley and Kettering, a consecutive-day intensive course also helps instructors plan around the M1 and A45’s rush-hour patterns directly, rather than trying to guess whether a particular Tuesday evening lesson will hit heavy traffic weeks in advance. That matters more here than in a smaller town, simply because the road network carries so much through traffic.

Learners from Kettering, Wellingborough, Towcester, Daventry and Brixworth make up a good share of this centre’s bookings, so give yourself extra time on the M1 or A45 if you are travelling in from one of these towns, particularly during rush hour. Since 12 May 2026, only the candidate can book, amend or cancel their DVSA practical test, so keep your own NSA account details throughout your course rather than relying on your instructor to manage this for you. Because Northampton also runs vocational tests alongside car and motorcycle categories, the waiting room can include a wider mix of candidates than a typical town centre, though car test routes themselves stick to the usual roads around Gladstone Road and the A45. Should a resit be needed, DVSA’s minimum ten working day gap between attempts applies here as anywhere else, giving enough time for an extra lesson or two concentrating on the M1 or A45 approach roads if that is where things went wrong first time.

Why Book With LPOD Academy?

Can LPOD book my practical test at this centre for me?
No. Since 12 May 2026, only you can book, change or manage your DVSA practical test. LPOD provides test date support instead: centre and timing guidance as standard, plus an optional Test Alerts + Booking Strategy add-on (£50) if you’d like us actively watching for earlier dates and helping you plan around them.

Which course should I choose before my test?
It depends on your experience. Complete beginners usually start with a Gold or Platinum course, while learners who have already had lessons or sat a test before often suit a Silver or Bronze course. Try our course recommendation tool for a personal suggestion.

Are LPOD instructors qualified?
Yes. Every LPOD instructor is a DVSA-approved ADI, paid full market rates, so you get a properly qualified instructor rather than the cheapest bidder.
