Practical test centre in Northampton

The M1 is the main route into Northampton for anyone travelling from London, Leicester or further afield, usually leaving the motorway to join the A45, which runs through the town and connects to most of the surrounding suburbs. Gladstone Road itself sits within a residential part of town, so the final approach involves narrower streets, parked cars, and a handful of junctions without traffic lights, which is a useful thing to practise before your test rather than leaving it to the day itself.

Because Northampton is such a large centre, the routes examiners use vary considerably: some tests stay largely within the residential streets near Gladstone Road, while others head out onto the A45 or towards the ring road for faster, dual carriageway driving. That matters more here than in a smaller town, simply because the road network carries so much through traffic.

Learners from Kettering, Wellingborough, Towcester, Daventry and Brixworth make up a good share of this centre’s bookings, so give yourself extra time on the M1 or A45 if you are travelling in from one of these towns, particularly during rush hour. Since 12 May 2026, only the candidate can book, amend or cancel their DVSA practical test, so keep your own NSA account details throughout your course rather than relying on your instructor to manage this for you. Because Northampton also runs vocational tests alongside car and motorcycle categories, the waiting room can include a wider mix of candidates than a typical town centre, though car test routes themselves stick to the usual roads around Gladstone Road and the A45. Should a resit be needed, DVSA’s minimum ten working day gap between attempts applies here as anywhere else, giving enough time for an extra lesson or two concentrating on the M1 or A45 approach roads if that is where things went wrong first time.
