Practical test centre in Northwich

Most learners reach Northwich via the M6, leaving at junction 19 and following the A556 into town. Navigation Road sits close to the River Weaver and the canal network that gives the town its name, so the immediate area around the test centre includes narrow bridges, one-way sections and a fair number of pedestrians crossing between the shops and the waterside. Northwich also has its own railway station on the Mid-Cheshire line, connecting to Manchester and Chester, which some candidates use to reach lessons if they are not being driven in directly.

Because the roads around Navigation Road are tighter than the open A556 approach, test routes here typically combine both: canal-side streets with reduced visibility, followed by faster stretches once you are back on the main roads out of town. An LPOD Academy intensive course, such as Silver 25 or Silver 30, spends real time on the town centre driving specifically because it catches out learners who have only practised on open roads, with a deposit from £180 depending on the course.

A consecutive-day course also suits Northwich well, since instructors can time lessons around the town’s narrow bridges and one-way sections at their quietest, then use the same block of days to cover the faster A556 approach once those tighter manoeuvres feel settled, rather than switching back and forth across separate weekly sessions.

Learners from Davenham, Hartford, Weaverham and Rudheath all use this centre, and because the town centre roads can be slow at peak times, allow a little extra time on your journey in. The independent driving section of the test usually lasts around 20 minutes, directed by road signs, sat-nav, or a mixture of both, so ask your instructor to cover both formats before your appointment. Since 12 May 2026, DVSA has required candidates to manage their own test bookings directly, rather than through an instructor, so hold onto your own account details throughout the course. The test also includes one set manoeuvre, chosen on the day from a parallel park, a bay park, or pulling up on the right and reversing, and Northwich’s canal-side streets give the examiner realistic spots to use rather than an artificial car park exercise. Should you need a resit, DVSA’s minimum ten working day gap between test attempts leaves time for a short block of extra lessons on Navigation Road’s bridges and one-way sections, which tend to be the part learners ask to revisit most.
