Derby Theory Test Centre

Derby Theory Test Centre covers a wide stretch of the East Midlands, with the standard £23 DVSA fee payable when you book your slot through GOV.UK. As one of the region’s larger centres, it tends to have more availability than smaller venues nearby, which makes it a practical first choice if your own local centre is booked up months out.

Learners travel in from Nottingham, Burton upon Trent, Belper, Ilkeston and Long Eaton, since Derby is within easy reach of all five and often has earlier dates than the alternatives.

A Silver 30 intensive course from LPOD is built to run either side of your Derby theory test, with practical lessons scheduled once your pass certificate comes through. For the full cost picture across both tests, our theory test costs guide is worth a read before you book.

The pass mark set by DVSA is 43 out of 50 for multiple-choice and 44 out of 75 for hazard perception, both required in one sitting. A pass certificate is valid for two years, which is how long you then have to book and sit the practical test. If you fall short on either section, expect a three-working-day wait before Derby will let you rebook, so proper Highway Code revision beforehand is worth the time.

Directions To Centre

Drivers heading to the centre should take the A52 and follow the signs for the city centre, where several car parks sit nearby. Anyone arriving by train will find Derby station close by, with a straightforward walk or a short taxi ride from the platform to the test centre. Bus passengers have plenty of options too, with numerous routes running into the heart of Derby and stopping around the centre, so check local timetables for the most convenient one.

Derby’s city centre can be busy at commuter times, so build a buffer into your journey rather than timing it to the minute. You will need your provisional licence at the desk, and DVSA will not run either section of the test, the multiple-choice questions or the hazard perception clips, without it. After you pass, note that from 12 May 2026 only the candidate can book or manage the DVSA practical test, so keep your own GOV.UK login details on hand. As one of the region’s larger centres, Derby can get through more candidates per day than smaller towns nearby, which is part of why availability tends to be better here. Derby’s car parks near the city centre can fill up on market days, so arriving a little earlier than usual is sensible if you are driving in.
