Durham Theory Test Centre

Durham Theory Test Centre handles DVSA theory test bookings for learners across County Durham, from candidates on their first attempt to those returning for a resit. Every booking goes through gov.uk and costs £23 at the time of writing. In line with DVSA policy, the exact address of the venue isn’t published on this page; that detail comes through in your booking confirmation instead.

Many learners here are working through LPOD Academy’s Bronze 15 or Platinum 50 courses, choosing an intensive block of lessons that lines up with when they expect their theory pass to come through. Since 12 May 2026, only the candidate can book or manage their own DVSA practical test, so don’t leave setting up your gov.uk account until after you’ve passed the theory. Our guide on how intensive courses work explains how that timing typically fits together. Candidates commonly travel in from Bishop Auckland, Consett, Spennymoor and Sunderland. Booking a weekday practical test afterwards means a further £62 payable to DVSA, quite separate from the £23 you’ll have spent on the theory element.

Directions To Centre

Driving in is fairly simple: follow the signs for the city centre and look for parking nearby, though spaces can be tight during the working day. Durham railway station is well connected on the East Coast line, and from there it’s either a short taxi ride or a walkable route into town depending on how much time you’ve got. Bus users benefit from frequent services from the surrounding towns; check the local timetable, get off at a central stop, and finish the last stretch on foot.

Because Durham’s city centre can be busy with tourists as well as commuters, build extra time into your journey rather than cutting it fine. You must bring your provisional licence and the confirmation for your booking; without both, the DVSA will not let you sit the test, and the fee is not refunded for a missed slot. Revise using the official DVSA question bank rather than outdated study guides, since it is updated periodically.

The multiple-choice section runs to 50 questions with a pass mark of 43, followed immediately by the hazard perception clips, 14 in total, where 44 out of 75 is required. The whole test is taken in silence at an individual screen; no notes, highlighters or reference material are permitted at any point. Staff check photo ID against your booking before you’re allowed through, and personal items go into a locker rather than staying with you. Rather than waiting for a letter, you get the pass or fail result on the spot, right there in the building.

Why Book With LPOD Academy?

Do I need to pass my theory test before booking an LPOD course?
No, you do not need a theory pass to book a course with us. Many learners sit their theory test early in an intensive week, so it is still fresh once the practical lessons begin.

Can LPOD book my theory test for me?
Yes. We can book your theory test for you as an optional add-on, £60 all in, which includes the £23 DVSA fee.

What does the LPOD theory course cover?
Our in-house online theory course covers all 14 topics, hazard perception and case studies, so you arrive at this centre fully prepared.
