By car, the A702 brings you into the city; follow signs for the centre once you’re near the city centre, and expect to pay for parking at one of the nearby car parks. Trains into Edinburgh Waverley put you within a short taxi ride or a roughly 15-minute walk of the centre. Bus routes running towards Lothian Road or Princes Street will also get you close; check current timetables since Edinburgh’s bus network changes route numbers more often than smaller towns.
City centre traffic and parking availability can be unpredictable, so allow more time than a quiet town would need. You must have your provisional licence and booking confirmation with you, and arriving late means the DVSA can refuse to run your test and keep the fee. It’s also worth checking whether roadworks are affecting your planned route on the morning of your appointment, since central Edinburgh sees more disruption than most Scottish towns.
Fifty multiple-choice questions come first, needing at least 43 right answers, before you move on to the hazard perception clips: 14 of them, with 44 out of 75 required to pass. Photo ID is checked on arrival, either your provisional driving licence or a passport, and anything you’re carrying goes into a locker before you’re seated. The test is taken on a computer at the centre, with everything shown on screen in English; anyone who needs extra support, such as an English-language voiceover through headphones, can request it when booking on GOV.UK. The outcome is shown immediately, so there’s no waiting around for post to arrive.
