Arriving by train, Preston station puts you a brisk ten-minute walk from the door. Coming by bus, several services run from the station and from park and ride sites on the edge of town, with city buses dropping close by.

The test itself is split into a multiple-choice section on the Highway Code and road procedure, followed by a hazard perception section made up of video clips, and both parts have to be passed together in the same sitting; if either half falls short, DVSA sets a minimum wait of three working days before you can book again. Arrive at least fifteen minutes early, since latecomers can be turned away and the fee forfeited, and bring nothing more than your provisional driving licence; phones and other electronic devices have to stay in a locker during the test. Most successful candidates put in a week or two of proper revision beforehand, working through the official DVSA app or a printed Highway Code and running through a batch of hazard perception clips until spotting developing hazards feels automatic rather than rushed.
