York Theory Test Centre

North Yorkshire learners, including those travelling in from Knaresborough, Selby, Malton, and Scarborough, generally book their theory test at the York centre before moving on to a practical. No shopfront address is published for the venue, in keeping with every DVSA theory centre, since the exact site is only confirmed once you’ve booked; what you actually need on the day is your provisional licence, valid photo ID, and time built in before your slot. Nationally the test hasn’t changed: 50 multiple-choice questions, 43 needed to pass, then 14 hazard perception clips out of a possible 75, with 44 as the mark to reach. Learners working through an LPOD intensive course frequently sit their York theory test at the start of the week, so the hazard perception and highway code knowledge is still fresh once the practical lessons ramp up over the following days. LPOD offers everything from Bronze 10 through Silver and Gold to Platinum 50, which matters here given how much of North Yorkshire this one centre effectively serves. It’s also worth knowing that since 12 May 2026, only the candidate can book or manage their DVSA practical test, replacing the old arrangement where a school could do it for them, so hang onto your theory pass certificate number for when you’re ready. That certificate is valid for two years, giving most learners a comfortable window to fit an intensive course and practical test around term time or shift patterns.

Directions To Centre

Drivers should take the A64, exit onto the A19, and follow signs for the city centre, where parking is available nearby, though York’s centre gets busy so allowing extra time to find a space is sensible. York Station is the obvious stop for anyone arriving by train, and from there it’s roughly a 15-minute walk or a short cab ride into the centre depending on how much luggage or time you’re carrying. A local bus to Clifford Street is another option, leaving only a few minutes’ walk to the test venue once you’re off, useful if the weather isn’t cooperating. Give yourself a comfortable margin before your appointment, since DVSA turns away late arrivals and the £23 fee isn’t refunded in that case, and a missed slot has to be rebooked and paid for again. Our guide to theory test costs and payment covers the wider costs involved in getting from provisional licence to full licence, and learners combining their theory with a course often choose the Platinum 50 package for the most structured route through both stages. If you’re coming from Knaresborough, Selby, Malton, Easingwold, or Scarborough, allow extra time on the A64 or A19 before you reach the city centre, particularly around school run times when traffic through the ring road builds up.
